Earlier this year, I wondered why we as a society were so willing to criticize our First Lady and First Daughters over their choice of clothing, and yet the same criticism would never come up about the President. I’m reasonably sure this issue is apolitical – I distinctly remember similar controversy and discussion over clothes worn by then-Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in the Bush Administration. So here we are in a democratic presidency, and we’re still talking about a female leader’s wardrobe. This time, it’s Michelle Obama’s shorts. On vacation. Seriously? We’re seriously talking about what the First Lady is wearing… on vacation? I’d understand it if she showed up in shorts to a Rose Garden event. Or to entertain a head of state. But on vacation? Am I the only person left who’s wondering why we collectively care? I get that Mrs. Obama is in the public eye in a way that you and I are not. But I think I’d be mortified if people were following me around on my vacation, wondering at my choice of backpacking clothes. I guess I’m waiting for the novelty to wear off. At what point will we be accustomed to the new administration enough that every cough, sniffle, sneeze and clothing gaffe won’t be news anymore? Surely we have something out there more compelling to talk about.
