TOKYO, Dec 28, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Japanese actress Kyoko Kishida, who starred in the 1964 classic "Woman in the Dunes," died this month in Tokyo at the age of 76.
The New York Times said Tursday that Kishida suffered from a brain tumor and died Dec. 17.
Kishida's biggest role was the unnamed woman in the 1964 avant garde feature about a young woman held captive in a pit by villagers who force her to harvest sand for them.
The Times said the bleak and unusually erotic film directed by Hiroshi Teshigahara reflected Japan's was honored at the Cannes and New York Film Festivals.
Kishida worked constantly up until her death and was best known for voice-over work on animation projects such as the long-running television series "Moomin."
