Vienna (dpa) - A previously unknown piano composition by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart discovered in Salzburg may become a surprising last highlight of Austria's Mozart anniversary year, reports said Wednesday.
A few months ago a piano piece most likely written by the Salzburg genius was discovered in an antique book of sheet music, the Austrian Press Agency reported. The book, dating from Mozart's lifetime, contains a number of short "piano pieces."
It was acquired by the archives of the Salzburg Archdiocese a few months ago. In addition to a number of works by anonymous composers it contains an "Allegro di Wolfgango Mozart." as well as a second piece which was also probably penned by Mozart.
Experts believe the composition to be one of Mozart's early works, written when he was aged between 6 and 10. The music had been compiled by two piano instructors working during Mozart's lifetime at the Salzburg court music school.
The facsimile will be presented on Friday in Salzburg. In 2006 Austria celebrated the 250 anniversary of Mozart's birthday with a wide range of activities.
