What a wonderful week of celebration it has been for the century old Cathedral of the Madeleine in the heart of Salt Lake City.
It has been a blessing for Catholics, but also for Utahns of all faiths to reflect on what the venerable edifice has meant to this community since its dedication on August 15, 1909.
As the seat of Utah's Catholic Bishop and the mother church for the state's 250,000 Catholics, the Cathedral of the Madeleine serves a traditional spiritual role. It is a place of reverence, solace and peace, where worship is augmented by the beauty of the building's design.
During its hundred year history, the cathedral has also become a place for community and interfaith gatherings. Earlier this year, for example, the inspirational sound of the renowned Mormon Tabernacle Choir, in concert, resonated vibrantly throughout the hall.
As has been described repeatedly during this week of celebration, the cathedral is one of the capital city's architectural gems. It is a revered community treasure as well as a spiritual beacon for good among people of all faiths.
