NEW YORK, Dec 22, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Broadcaster Diane Sawyer's gift to her "Good Morning America" co-anchor Robin Roberts has resulted in a full college scholarship for a Mississippi student.
The Biloxi (Miss.) Sun-Herald reported that the scholarship gift to Mississippi's Pass Christian High School, Roberts' alma mater, was the result of Sawyer picking her ABC co-anchor as her "secret Santa" recipient.
"I've been carrying on so wildly about not giving 'things' anymore," Sawyer explained. "So I'm not going to give a 'thing.' This is for you."
A tearful Roberts, who grew up in Mississippi city of Pass Christian, responded to her TV co-host's generous gift by stating it could have long-ranging implications.
"Education is so important to my family," Roberts said. "We've established foundations and scholarships. You're going to change somebody's life. You're amazing."
The paper said that the gift would provide one Pass Christian student with a four-year scholarship to Southeastern Louisiana University, where Roberts garnered her college degree.
