In what has become an opening-day tradition replacing the old "beep test," Bronco Mendenhall led the Cougars on a morning trek to the "Y" to get the day underway.

On an August morning that felt a lot more like late September, the players got their conditioning in before meetings and meals, leading up to the afternoon session of practice.

Freshmen and transfers will go from 3:30-5:30pm, with veterans going from 4:00-6:00pm; between 4:00 and 5:30, the two groups will be practicing together. Saturday and Monday practices will be helmets only.

A couple of other roster notes that I failed to squeeze in on Friday:

Walk-on WR Matt Edwards is LaVell Edwards' grandson.

Walk-on LB Jordan Winger is the brother of former Cougar and current Pitsburgh Steeler Chris Hoke (the brothers' father is a Hoke; their mother is a Winger).

--

Notable number changes:

O'Neill Chambers from 11 to 4

Luke Ashworth from 13 to 29

Mike Hague from 32 to 36

Brenden Gaskins from 6 to 16

Bryan Kariya from 28 to 33

McKay Jacobson from 80 to 6

Jordan Pendleton from 27 to 1

Look for my first "Camp Cougar" report shortly after the afternoon practice session and interviews conclude--expected to be somewhere between 6:30-7:00pm.

Wrapping up our "Countdown Trivia" with the answer to yesterday's final question:

"True or False: no national media members picked BYU to go undefeated in 1984."

--

The answer is: False. Louis Deaux of the Football News picked BYU to go 13-0, in what was supposed to be a bit of a "rebuilding year" after the graduation of Steve Young and Gordon Hudson.
