NEW YORK, Dec 20, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Self-described New York colorist and geometric abstract painter Larry Zox has died of cancer at the age of 69.

Zox's rich-hued, sharp-edged paintings had made a strong contribution to the Color Field movement of the 1960s and '70s.

"In Mr. Zox's signature works of the mid- to late 1960s, flatly painted diamonds, triangles and other hard-edged shapes were orchestrated into brilliant symmetrical and asymmetrical compositions of dynamically juxtaposed colors," The New York Times said Wednesday. "Areas of raw canvas between the colors encouraged them to function harmoniously."

He was still being shown as recently as the one at the Stephen Haller Gallery in the Chelsea district of New York City in 2005 where he showed new canvases that, according to The Times' critics, were "much freer in execution and more emotive than his mid-career work."

Born in Des Moines, Iowa, on May 31, 1936, Zox moved to New York where he studied with among others, George Grosz.

He leaves behind his second wife, Virginia King Zox, a daughter, two sons, and two grandchildren.
