Each year on this day, the people of Utah celebrate Pioneer Day.

For those whose familial roots run deep in the settlement of this region, the day, of course, has special meaning. It is a time to revere those ancestors who came across the plains and traversed mountain passes to establish homes in what now is Utah.

Pioneer Day, however, isn't only about events of the past. It is also a reminder of the pioneering spirit that has always been and will always be a part of the human experience. In extolling the sacrifices, accomplishments and virtues of pioneers past, Utahns also have opportunity this day to contemplate contemporary pioneering efforts that are taking society into the future.

This week, for example, we've been reminded of the value of space exploration and the benefits that have come our way because of man's journey 40-years ago to the moon. Researchers in other fields continue their quest for knowledge and understanding in a host of pioneering endeavors. The green movement and adaptation to cleaner, more efficient energy is one of the significant pioneering efforts of our day. And the list goes on.

Indeed, this unique holiday brings a sense of gratitude for pioneers both past and present. KSL joins enthusiastically in the celebration.
