BOSTON (AFX) - Stuart Layne, a former Boston Celtics executive who launched a sports marketing firm four years ago, was named Thursday as publisher of Metro Boston, a free commuter newspaper.
Layne's appointment, which took effect immediately, was announced by the newspaper's majority owner, Metro International SA. He replaces Bridget Seay, who had recently served as acting publisher and was named Thursday as the five-year-old newspaper's associate publisher.
"Having someone with Stuart's local experience and marketing expertise shows our serious intentions to grow aggressively in Boston," said Robert Patterson, Metro International's executive vice president for the Americas.
In 2002, Layne founded a sports and entertainment marketing firm, Seven 2 Sports Marketing.
He previously served as executive vice president of marketing and sales with the National Basketball Association's Boston Celtics, where he worked for nine years. From 1989 to 1993, he was vice president of marketing for Major League Baseball's Seattle Mariners.
Layne also spent 12 years in broadcasting, including on-air jobs and positions in sales and management.
Metro International publishes 70 daily Metro editions in 21 countries across Europe, North and South America, and Asia. Last year, New York Times Co. -- which also owns The Boston Globe -- bought a 49 percent interest in Metro Boston. Copyright 2006 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be
