PROVO, Utah (AP) -- Trent Plaisted scored 20 points and had eight rebounds to lead Brigham Young to an 81-69 win over San Jose State Wednesday night.
Plaisted scored 13 in the second half including four in a decisive 15-4 run that pushed a 39-37 BYU lead with 18:00 left to a 54-41 lead with 13:28 remaining in the game. Lee Cummard scored five of his 11 and Jimmy Balderson added four of his 11 during the run.
BYU (5-2) stretched its lead to 16 points with 8:35 left on a shot by Jonathan Tavernari. The Cougars led again by 16 when Cummard scored again with 5:18 left.
San Jose State (1-7) cut into the Cougar lead, but could only get within eight with 1:09 left on a Devonte Thomas shot and again at :53 on a basket by Darion Goins.
In the first half, the Spartans overcame a 7-0 start by the Cougars to take their largest lead of the game at 20-16 with 10:21 left in the half.
The Cougars closed the half on a 9-3 run to take a 36-28 lead into the break.
Keena Young also scored in double figures for the Cougars with 16 and Rashaun Broadus had 10 points.
Menelik Barbary came off the bench to lead San Jose State in scoring with 14 points. Goins added 12 while Tim Pierce and Jamon Hill each scored 11.
The Cougars have now won 18 straight at home.
