PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- David Patten had 17 points and Dan Henry added 15 as Weber State scored a 72-56 preseason victory over Portland Tuesday.
Both teams struggled to score over long periods. Weber State had a 30-24 halftime lead despite just 35 percent shooting.
The visiting Wildcats (5-4) heated up in the second half, hitting 10 of 20 shots.
Portland hit 39 percent in each half.
Twice in the second half, the Pilots (2-8) went six minutes without a field goal.
With Portland's cold shooting, the game appeared to be all but over after the Wildcats scored 10 unanswered points to take a 48-31 led with 9:31 left.
But the lead was down to 60-50 with 1:50 left following a steal and layup and then a jumper by Portland's Brian McTear.
But the Pilots got no closer to the Wildcats, who made eight of nine foul shots in the last 90 seconds.
Weber state, which shot 41 percent for the game, helped its cause by forcing 19 Portland turnovers, which led to 21 Wildcat points.
Dezmon Harris added 12 points for the winners. Nobody from Portland scored in double figures. Jamie Jones, Walter Thompson, McTear and Parker Emerson had eight each.
