My 12 year-old son is very interested in meteorology and wants a weather station for Christmas. Do you have any suggestions of a good, basic weather station, or what we should look for--what features would be most beneficial? What's the best way for a kid to get started on the path to meteorology??? Thanks for your help!

We've been getting lots of these questions in so it seems that people are thinking weather for the holidays in the way of gift giving. Weather gifts rock for any type of weather enthusiasts. The beautiful thing is that there are gift for people of any age and most people enjoy weather or know a little something about it so it's an appropriate gift for a lot of folks.

For a weather station you just want to make sure it has the basic stuff. You want to be sure it has a good thermometer that you can place far away from the house and be able to read it inside. A barometer to measure air pressure is important as well as an anemometer to measure the wind speed. A rain guage would also be useful and of course, you'll report those rain totals into us right!?

You can find great weather stuff at windandweather.com the link is on the right. They offer a variety of weather stations and tons of other weather and nature gifts. A great gift is a Galileo thermometer for someone who you know loves weather but you aren't sure what to get. Another great one that I recommend to school is "The Weather Book" by Jack Williams former Weather editor of USA Today. This book covers a lot of basics and has fun photos and graphics of how things work and it's easy to understand if you aren't a science whiz.

Best of luck and happy holidays.
