OREM, Utah (AP) -- Junior forward Jordan Brady scored 14 points Thursday to lead Utah Valley State to a 69-37 win over Montana State in the season opener for both teams.
In a contest they never trailed, the Wolverines raced out to a 20-4 lead as the Bobcats committed a string of early turnovers. In the second half UVSC continued to pull away, as Montana State shooters got colder from the field as the game winded down.
The Bobcats dug themselves into a deep hole by committing 11 turnovers in the first 10 minutes of play. The Wolverines capitalized on the Montana State miscues by building a 20-4 lead behind a pair of 3-pointers from guard Ryan Toolson.
The Bobcats rebounded late in the first half, outscoring UVSC 14-13 over the final eight minutes for a 33-18 halftime deficit.
But in the second half, Montana State shot only 20 percent from the field and 11 percent from 3-point range. Utah Valley shot 47 percent from the field in the second half and watched its lead increase.
Toolson's fast break layup off a Chris Bailey assist with one minute left in the game made it 69-37 and stretched the Wolverine lead to its largest margin of the night at 32 points.
Brady added seven rebounds to go with his 14 points. Toolson and Bailey scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Ted Morris (10 points) was the only Bobcat to score in double figures.
