LOGAN, Utah - Utah State produced 362 yards, but just 10 points in suffering its worst loss since 1989 as the Aggies dropped a game to Hawai'i 63-10 here Saturday afternoon. USU fell to 1-8 overall and 1-4 in the WAC, while Hawai'i improved to 7-2, 5-1 and accepted a bid to the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl.
The 53-point scoring margin was the worst for USU since it lost to Southern California by 56 points (66-10) in 1989.
After Hawai'i scored a touchdown on its opening drive, Utah State responded with a scoring drive on its own, kicking a 46-yard field goal for its first made field goal of the season. The Aggies had been the only team in the nation without a tree-pointer this season.
However, Hawai'i scored the next three touchdowns of the half to take a 28-3 lead into the break. USU opened the third quarter .with a seven-play 80-yard drive that was capped with an Antraun McDaniel one-yard touchdown run to make the score Hawai'i 28-10.
The visiting Warriors then added five more touchdowns the rest of the game as they compiled 572 yards, including 486 passing.
USU's Kevin Robinson pulled in five balls for 84 yards to lead the Aggie offense, while quarterback Riley Nelson hit 17 of 29 passes for 225 yards and rushed for 65 yards on 15 carries. However, the freshman also threw one interception and fumbled twice in the contest.
Defensively Terrance Washington recorded the eighth interception of his career, while Devon Hall and Paul Igboeli each had a team-best five tackles.
USU will hit the road for consecutive games at Nevada and Boise State the next two Saturdays before closing the home season against New Mexico State on Nov. 25.
POSTGAME NOTES vs. Hawai'i, Nov. 4, 2006
- USU made its first field goal of the season when Bryan Shields connected on a 46-yarder in the first quarter. The Aggies had been the only team in the nation without a field goal made (entered the game 0-of-2 on the year).
- Senior safety Terrance Washington recorded the eighth interception of his career and first this season. It was only the sixth interception UH quarterback Colt Brennan had thrown this season.
- USU produced 362 yards, its second most in a game this season (373 at Louisiana Tech in last game).
- Hawai'i's 62 points were the most allowed by USU since Boise State scored 63 in 2002 (63-38).
- The 53-point deficit was the biggest loss for the Aggies since losing by 56 (66-10) against USC in 1989.
- WR Aaron Lesue recorded his second and third receptions of the season as he had one catch for five yards in the season opener at Wyoming. He had 55 yards on his two receptions on Saturday.
- WR Omar Sawyer, entered the game with one reception on the year and had three catches for 33 yards Saturday.
- USU committed 11 penalties, its most in its last 18 games.
