I got a couple of new books for Ethan's ever-expanding book shelf the other day, and I thought I'd review them here for you. The first one was Ladybug Girl and Bumblebee Boy by David Soman and Jacky Davis. This picture book is based on a wonderful idea - two little kids playing together who are bored and decide to become . . . superheroes. My son is often pretending to be some kind of superhero or another, so I thought this theme would appeal to him. The book did. The pictures are great and the characters are great, but honestly - it left me feeling, "Hum. Not much to it." I felt like the authors could have done so much more with such an inspiring theme and characters.
My real find for the month was Blueberry Girl by Neil Gaiman. Oh wow - this is incredible. It's a prayer, of sorts, for all children, and the language and pictures are just magical. "Help her to help herself, help her to stand, help her to lose and to find. Teach her we're only as big as our dreams. Show her that fortune is blind." I love this book. Even a girl my age found wisdom and hope in its pages. I hope my son will enjoy it for a long time because his mother will love reading it to him.
So - one to get for sure, and one to consider this week. A big thumb's up for Blueberry Girl and a lukewarm recommendation for Ladybug Girl and Bumblebee Boy.
