The election is over and the campaign rhetoric, thankfully, will subside for a while. Now comes time for those given the trust of public office to take steps to solve society's most pressing problems.

KSL especially hopes those with a say in how the nation spends taxpayer dollars will pay attention to the alarming mantra of David M. Walker.

In his role as Comptroller General of the United States, Walker is the nation's chief accountability officer, and he's crisscrossing the nation with what he calls his "fiscal wake-up tour." His brief 15-minute power point presentation describes the nation's fiscal mess.

Entitlements are gobbling up federal dollars. The national debt is exploding and could result in the economy becoming paralyzed as baby boomers retire and begin drawing Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. War and other government demands exacerbate the crisis.

Walker says the status quo is not an option. Faster economic growth can help, but it cannot solve the problem. Tough choices need to be made soon. Budgetary controls must be strengthened, government financial reporting improved and expenditures of every kind reexamined.

KSL welcomes the Comptroller General's timely wake-up call. Those entrusted with public office need to hear the message clearly . . . and set aside partisanship to do what's needed for the nation's fiscal survival.
