COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 31, 2006) - After finishing the season with an unblemished 9-0 record and winning the SWJCFC (Southwest Junior College Football Conference) regular season title, Blinn College (Texas) was rewarded Tuesday as they received 105 total points in this weeks NJCAA Football poll, the most any team can garner, while also collecting all seven first place votes.
The Buccaneers put an exclamation point on their best regular season since 1996 by defeating Navarro College 48-18. Blinn used three defensive touchdowns in the second half to add to their 28-18 halftime lead to secure their ninth-consecutive win. Cornerback Ryan Mouton led the defensive effort with two interception returns for touchdowns while defensive end Paul Mansfield returned a fumble for a touchdown.
The SWJCFC's top quarterback, Brad Guidry, threw three touchdown passes in the first half for Blinn, one each to Blake Kelly, Bernard Scott and Marcus Brigham. Scott, the nation's leading rusher (163.5 yards/game) gained 175 yards on 29 carries while kicker David Orosco added field goals of 18 and 24 yards to round out the Blinn scoring.
Blinn heads into the SWJCFC playoffs as the No. 1 seed and will host Cisco Junior College in the first round on Nov. 4th. The Buccaneers are looking to advance to their first bowl game since 1999.
A dream of an undefeated season and a shot at its fourth national championship in eight years was not to be for Butler Community College, who fell from the top spot to No. 4 in this week's poll. The Grizzlies lost to an un-ranked Highland Community College team that made its season with a 43-29 upset. However, Butler still managed to win their fifth-consecutive Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference regular season title and they head into their conference playoffs as the No. 1 seed.
Moving up to the No. 2 position in this week's poll is Pearl River Community College (Miss). The Wildcats are used to being high in the poll as they entered this season at No. 1 and held that position for the first three weeks of the season. Pearl River clinched the No. 2 seed in the Southern Division of the MACJC (Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges) with a 36-7 win over Hinds Community College. They finished the regular season with an 8-1 record and will face Northwest Mississippi Community College in the first round of the MACJC Playoffs.
Previously No. 4 Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College also dropped several spots in this week's poll to No. 10 after losing their last game of the season, 14-7 to Southwest Mississippi Community College . The Mississippi Gulf Coast loss helped Snow College (Utah), Vermilion Community College (Minn.), Coffeyville Community College (Kan.), Iowa Central Community College and Lackawanna College (N.Y.) claim higher positions in the Top-10.
This week's poll features a three-way tie for the 18th-ranked spot between Northland Community and Technical College (Minn.), Eastern Arizona College and North Iowa Area Community College as well as a three-way tie for the final spot in the poll (No. 21) between Jones Community College (Miss.), Cisco Junior College (Texas) and Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.
