LONDON, Oct 26, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Britain's Queen Elizabeth dropped an official visit to open the Arsenal soccer club's new stadium because of persistent back problems.
Buckingham Palace announced the queen hurt her back shortly before a trip to the Baltic States, The Times of London said. The problems became worse during her annual holiday at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.
Doctors have advised the queen to cut back on her schedule. She planned to hold all scheduled audiences at the palace on Thursday.
The queen was also expected to give up plans to go to the races at Newmarket Friday. The Jockey Club had planned to honor her 80th birthday at lunch.
Lisa Hancock, marketing director at Newmarket Racecourses, said the cancellation was disappointing.
"The race meeting will obviously go ahead as planned, with all the races themed around some of the Queen's notable horses from years gone by," she said.
