New Mexico was tabbed as the preseason favorite by a slim margin after finishing tied for third place in last year's regular-season standings. New Mexico received eight of 19 first-place votes and 137 total points. BYU had seven first-place votes and finished second with 134 points, followed by TCU with four first-place votes and 126 points.
