ANNAPOLIS, Md., Oct 21, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- A 1981 U.S. Naval Academy graduate has become the first woman named to serve as second in command at the school.
Margaret Klein will become commandant of midshipmen in December, the equivalent of dean of students at a civilian college, the Baltimore Sun reports.
The appointment comes a year after a Pentagon report recommended more women in senior positions at the service academies as a means to end a long tradition of sexual harassment and violence.
Klein has varied experience, including serving as an aide to Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, and has a master's degree in educational leadership from the University of Maine.
She is currently serving on the aircraft carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower as chief of staff to the commander of Carrier Strike Group Eight, based in Norfolk, Va.
Klein replaces Capt. Bruce Grooms, who became the first black to serve as commandant of midshipmen in 2005. Grooms is being promoted to rear admiral and transferred to serve as deputy director of the Navy policy office for submarine forces.
