First off... hey! A momentous occasion today as I post my first official KSL blog. I've posted as the "Sultan of Sport" for the Nightside Project in the past, but this marks my first since joining the news staff last year.
------
It's no secret. I'm a dude. You know... a man - likes sports, steak and potatoes, and grunting.
But yesterday, my assignment was to seek out people to talk to about women's fashion... more specifically YOUNG women's fashion. The story is upcoming, so I won't give it away... but it led to a few interesting phone calls and conversations.
First was my call was to a well known store in the mall. I was hoping to talk to one of the managers. Eventually, I was forwarded to the regional supervisor. In an attempt show I was educated on the topic, I told her, "I know what you mean, I've been to a number of your stores before."
She seemed a little caught off guard.
"So........ you shop in our men's section?"
I didn't even know this place HAD a men's section. No, I just have been shopping with girlfriends before, which means I'm vaguely familiar with women's retail stores.
She seemed almost... perturbed!

Later, I went to the mall to get reaction from random shoppers. About 8 or 9 times, I stopped a female shopper and said, "I've been assigned to do a story about women's fashion... or more specifically, young women's fashion."
Now, I've been watching a lot of the TV drama "Lie To Me", which over analyzes body language. Yeah... the slight pause and blank stare I got every time told me they were thinking one of two things...
"Excuse me?!" - or - "Hahahaha!"
I'm not sure which bothered me more. Needless to say, I wasted no time moving on and asking the questions to make it a little more clear where I was going with it.
I get it though... some random guy, walking around the mall with a microphone... the last thing they probably expected me to ask for was analysis on women's clothes.
All that said... I do like to shop, and had to get out of the mall as soon as I was finished with the story.
