RUSTON, La. (AP) -- Louisiana Tech running back Freddie Franklin has been suspended and will miss the game against Utah State, coach Jack Bicknell said Thursday.

Bicknell said he decided to suspend Franklin after the junior tailback repeatedly missed classes and conditioning workouts over the last few weeks.

Through the first six games of the season, Franklin has rushed for 156 yards and two touchdowns on 37 carries as the backup to starter Patrick Jackson. Franklin is also the team's leading punt returner, averaging 8.7 yards.

A true freshman, Daniel Porter, will move up to second on the depth chart, Bicknell said.

The coach said another freshman, William Griffin, could see his first action of the year. It will depend on the status of Jackson, who left the game against Idaho because of an injury. He is listed as questionable.
