SYDNEY, Oct 8, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- A stage musical based on the 1994 Australian cult movie "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" has opened to mixed reviews in Sydney.
The $6 million stage production of the adventures of a couple of drag queens and a transsexual follows the movie's story line as the trio travel by bus to Alice Springs.
"Though thin on plot, it is big on scene-stealing costumes and the pluck of the drag trio ... replete with disco and pop songs," said a review in The Age. However, the paper said "missed opportunities and structural problems dog the show's weaker second half ... ."
The Australian said the musical "has been born by the genuine affection people have for the film," but "what's lost -- not completely but in large measure -- is the complex texture of characters and relationships that give the film its heart and soften and accommodate its crude edges."
