WASHINGTON, Jul 15, 2003 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Members of the California Walnut Commission are celebrating a Food and Drug Administration affirmation of the benefits of walnuts.

The FDA announced Tuesday it has approved the health claim that research indicates "eating 1.5 ounces per day of walnuts as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease."

The FDA decision came in response to a petition filed by the commission, which noted international scientific research substantiating the specific benefit of consuming walnuts as part of a heart-healthy diet in reducing the risk of heart disease.

The commission, which represents more than 5,000 walnut growers in California, also noted walnuts are the second largest single source of antioxidants. Only rose hips have more.
