TORONTO, Aug 14, 2003 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Sudden acute respiratory syndrome has claimed another life in Toronto, although it has been declared under control, a report said Thursday.
Family doctor Nestor Yanga died Wednesday in a Toronto hospital of SARS at the age of 54, the Toronto Star reported.
Tuesday, doctors discovered internal bleeding in his liver and surgery was planned for Wednesday.
Yanga is the first physician with the disease to die in Canada.
He was among three of four physicians who came down with SARS, and was admitted to hospital on April 8, in the earliest days of the first phase of the city's outbreak.
On April 4, he had contracted the virus from a patient, who was hospitalized and later recovered.
SARS first appeared in Toronto in March, when a woman returning from China died at home of the disease. Hundreds were infected when her son went to a hospital looking for medical help. He later died of the disease.
