WHITTIER, Calif., Sep 26, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Norman Lewis, expert on the English-language and author of "30 Days to a More Powerful Vocabulary," has died at the age of 93 in Whittier, Calif.
The Los Angeles Times reported on the death of the seminal author, whose "30 Days to a More Powerful Vocabulary" taught readers "how to make words your slaves" in 15 minutes a day.
The Times reported that Lewis died Sept. 8 of age-related causes at an assisted-living facility.
Lewis's "30 Days to a More Powerful Vocabulary," published in 1942, is considered one of the most widely referenced how-to books of its kind. The book has been revised many times, the latest of which was in 2003.
"There are a jillion vocabulary books now, but this one has stood up over the years even as vocabulary changes. It has endured because it's simple and it's good," Helene Mochedlover, manager of the international languages department at the Los Angeles Central Library, told the Times.
Among the other 63 books Lewis wrote or edited include "Word Power Made Easy," published in 1949, and "Roget's New Pocket Thesaurus in Dictionary Form" (1961).
Born in New York in 1912, Lewis is survived by his wife, two daughters and two granddaughters.
