FAIRFAX, Va., Sep 25, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Blues legend Etta Baker, died Saturday in Fairfax, Va., while visiting one of her daughters, at age 93.

Baker -- a mother of nine -- was a master of the Piedmont blues, and used an unusual two-fingered picking style on the guitar , the Charlotte (N.C.) Observer reported Monday.

Baker's oldest daughter, Darlene Davis, said her mother died Saturday afternoon after traveling from her Morganton home to Fairfax, Va., to visit one of her other daughters who requires dialysis.

She said her mother's health had been poor since the 1990s.

"Mother's been up and down for the past couple of years, but she felt like she needed to be there with my sister," Davis said.

"She embodied everything we love about the South," Tim Duffy, who worked with Baker through his Music Maker Relief Foundation, told the Raleigh (N.C.) News & Observer.

Baker switched to banjo about a decade ago and had most recently performed about a month ago.
