SANDY — Middle-earth is coming to Utah.
Hale Centre Theatre announced its 2027 season on Monday, headlined by a U.S.-exclusive production of "The Lord of the Rings" musical, a rare staging of the West End show that will only be performed in Sandy.
The production (running Feb. 15 to April 17, 2027) brings J.R.R. Tolkien's epic story to the stage, following Frodo and the Fellowship as they journey to destroy the One Ring. The musical is known for its large-scale storytelling, blending live music, movement and stagecraft to recreate the world of hobbits, elves and dark forces.
"Bringing 'The Lord of the Rings' to our stage is something truly special," said Sally Dietlein, co-founder and artistic director of Hale Centre Theatre. "It represents the kind of large-scale storytelling and technical innovation we're able to create here, and it sets the tone for a season full of adventure, music and unforgettable experiences."
The 2027 season also features a mix of new productions, returning favorites and classic plays, including the regional premiere of "The Heart of Rock and Roll," built around the music of Huey Lewis, and a new production of "Disney's Tarzan."
Classic theater fans will see the return of "West Side Story," along with "Arsenic and Old Lace" and Ken Ludwig's "The Three Musketeers." The lineup also includes the suspenseful thriller "The Woman in Black" and the comedy "Beau Jest."
Hale Centre Theatre will continue its annual holiday tradition with "A Christmas Carol," marking its 43rd year on stage.
One additional show — a Tony Award-winning musical — will be announced later this spring.
Season ticket renewals open June 1. Tickets for the 2027 season will be available to the public starting Aug. 1 at hct.org.
