SALT LAKE CITY — A man shot by Salt Lake police and hospitalized last week has now been booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.
Lawrence Lute Vigil, 37, was arrested for investigation of assault on an officer, being a restricted person in possession of a gun and obstruction of justice.
Just after midnight on Friday, Salt Lake police were serving a search warrant at an apartment at 49 S. 800 East. Because the search was deemed to be "high risk," a SWAT team was used to serve it, said Salt Lake police spokesman Glen Mills. The warrant was to search for drugs and weapons.
"As the front door was breached, officers containing the rear of the building announced there was a male — later identified as (Vigil) — who attempted to 'bail out the window but jumped back inside,'" a police booking affidavit states. "(Vigil) returned to the window and could be seen holding something in his hand. This object was described as a small, black object, consistent with the color and size of a handgun. It was said that (Vigil) raised his hand and pushed out the window screen with this object in his hand. An officer at the rear saw this and fired at (Vigil), striking him at least once."
Vigil was taken to a local hospital to be treated for undisclosed injuries not believed to be life-threatening. Police found a gun outside the apartment, according to the affidavit.
"Inside the apartment, officers located magazines and ammunition," the arrest report says. "(Vigil) admitted to being in possession of the pistol. He said he'd gone to the window with the intention of discarding it before police made entry."
