Vikings Pillage WSU Homecoming Game

OGDEN, Utah -- Portland State (3-2 overall; 1-0 Big Sky) spoiled the homecoming game of Weber State (1-3; 0-1) on Saturday night with a 30-20 defeat of the Wildcats at Stewart Stadium.

Yards were at a premium in the defensive battle not indicated by the final score. The Wildcats rung up 192 yards to the Vikings 161, but PSU was much more efficient taking advantage of several opportunities.

The Vikings went up 10-0 in the first quarter after Kelena Ho'okano's 3-yard TD run followed up a 43-yard Eric Azorr field goal that was just under two minutes earlier.

The 'Cats fought back to make the score 10-7 at the half as Trevyn Smith scored on an 11-yard run with 5:05 left in the second quarter.

Early in the third, Tremayne Kirkland hauled in a 15-yard pass from quarterback Rob Freeman to put the Vikings up 17-7.

The 'Cats cut the lead once again with a 27-yard Conor Foley field goal to make the score 17-10, but they would get no closer.

Another field goal by Azorr ended the scoring, although the Wildcats would threaten with about a minute and a half left to play. On the ensuing drive, WSU quarterback Shawn Woods hit Tim Toone on a 77-yard strike, down to the Viking three-yard line. But following a fumble that set the 'Cats back to the 11, Woods was intercepted for the third time on the night, ending any chance the 'Cats had remaining.

Woods finished the night with 119 yards passing, hitting 8 of 19 passes. Bryant Eteuati hauled in three passes for 16 yards to add to his 206 return yards, giving him 222 all-purpose yards.

The 'Cats rushed for only 63 yards, with Marcus Mailei getting 40 yards on seven carries to lead the ground attack. Smith finished the night with 37 yards on nine carries.
