THE SOCCER PITCH — According to legend, William Tell lived in Switzerland in the 14th century. He was a skilled hunter, and as you probably recall, was famous for his archery talents.

While there are numerous versions of the folktale, the most famous one about Tell is when a wicked Austrian bailiff forced him to shoot an apple off his son's head with a crossbow. This dangerous punishment followed Tell's refusal to bow down to the bailiff.

Fortunately, Tell split the apple on his son's head, without so much as giving him a scratch. And his brave act helped inspire a rebellion against Austrian rule. I couldn't help but think of the famous story when I saw this video.

That's one brave mom. Her son has a strong leg, and that ball was really moving. Fortunately, the cone went flying in the air, and the woman didn't get bonked on the back of the head. Had the ball hit her, she'd probably have a headache for the rest of the day.

If I'm asked to coach my son's soccer team again next year, I'll try to follow her example. Be brave. Support the players in their challenges. And, above all, don't take a soccer ball to the head.
