As families gear up for the upcoming Utah College Application Week (UCAW), it's an excellent opportunity for high school seniors, especially first-generation and low-income students, to take a first step toward their future.

Sponsored by the Utah System of Higher Education (USHE) and supported by higher institutions across the state, UCAW is designed to make the college application process accessible, supported and successful for every student.

What is Utah College Application Week?

UCAW is a state-wide event that transforms the often daunting college application process into an approachable, collaborative effort. Over the course of a high school's assigned UCAW week, high school seniors are provided with dedicated time and resources to complete their college, community college, or technical school applications.

It's a coordinated effort built on support, encouragement, and expert guidance that ensures students don't miss out on this important first step toward higher education.

During UCAW, students have the chance to meet directly with college representatives who can answer questions and provide valuable insights into the application process. They may also receive assistance from teachers, counselors, and community volunteers, who are all working together to help students complete and submit their applications confidently.

Angela Sanders, director of admissions at Snow College, notes, "This is an invaluable time for students who are not familiar with the process to have hands-on support from both their high school advisors and higher education admission experts."

What parents should expect

Each high school organizes its own version of UCAW, often involving a designated coordinator, frequently a counselor, CTE director, or school administrator, who oversees the event.

Schools usually arrange for volunteers, including college representatives, teachers, and community members, to be available to assist students during designated times. To ensure students are prepared, coordinators will gather necessary documentation, such as transcripts, Social Security numbers (if applicable), and residency information.

Parents can expect to receive communication from their child's high school about the specific schedule and activities planned for UCAW. Since each school customizes their event, it's important to stay informed and ask questions to better understand how the event will operate at your child's school.

Questions to ask your student

To make the most of UCAW and support your child's college aspirations, consider engaging them with some thoughtful questions prior to their UCAW experience:

  • Have you looked into what colleges or programs interest you?
  • Do you know what documents or information you'll need to complete your applications?
  • Would you like help reviewing your list of potential colleges or discussing financial aid options?
  • Did you meet with a college representative or counselor who can offer additional guidance?
  • What are your next steps after submitting your applications?

Activities to engage in for higher education experiences

Many colleges and universities offer multiple opportunities to for high school students to experience campus and learn about their institution prior to application:

  • In-person or virtual admissions specialist appointments.
  • In-person or virtual campus tours.
  • Daily or overnight on-campus events.
  • Class workshops.

Encouraging your students to reflect on these questions can foster their independence and ensure they take full advantage of the resources provided during UCAW.

Utah College Application Week is more than just a series of applications; it's a launchpad for your child's future. As a parent or guardian, your encouragement, questions, and involvement are vital. Help your student see this event not just as a school requirement, but as a meaningful first step toward their dreams.
