THE FINAL FRONTIER — How do you like to celebrate on the Fourth of July? Fireworks are an obvious answer, but I'm always curious about how other people make the day special. Possible ideas could include a bike parade, boat parade, water balloon fight, outdoor movie, BBQ cook-off, bonfire, or a historical reenactment.
If none of those suggestions are particularly enticing to you, maybe you should head to the town of Glacier View, Alaska, next July. You see, there's a tradition up there that involves gathering along a mountain river to watch junker cars go flying hundreds of feet through the air and then crash at the bottom of a cliff.
Maybe that description's a little confusing. Check out this video to see exactly what the Glacier View Fourth of July Car Launch looks like.
This event has been going on for a couple of decades. And, as you can see from the video, it attracts a large crowd each year. According to one news report, more than 1,000 trees were removed from the viewing area this year to accommodate more attendees.
While this car launch might strike some of us as a weird way to celebrate the holiday, that's kind of the point. As the event's official website states: "Alaska has been a magnet for dreamers and misfits."
