MAGNA — Small wind gusts helped a backyard fire quickly spread to the main home in Magna and a nearby power pole, causing significant damage and an area blackout.
Magna fire officials say the fire started about 2:30 p.m. at 3100 South and 9000 West, just as wind gusts were increasing in the area. The blaze was sparked behind the house near a garage before spreading to an RV and then the house, they said.
A power pole near the home has also been damaged, causing a power outage in the area. Fire officials said the power pole would need to be replaced.
Information on what sparked the fire was not immediately available.
Six people lived in the home, but only three were in the house at the time of the fire. Everyone escaped safely with no injuries, firefighters said, but there is a pet missing.
One firefighter was suspected of having heat exhaustion, but no others were injured.
Firefighters from South Salt Lake, South Jordan and West Valley City assisted in fighting the blaze, which fire officials now say is out with the exception of hot spots they continue to extinguish.
