ST. GEORGE — Ongoing efforts to inform the public about changes coming to the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway manifested at the recent Dixie Regional Transportation Expo. At a booth set up at the day-long event, representatives for the national park spoke to expo attendees and handed out fliers detailing pending restrictions for oversized vehicles starting next year.

While over a year away, representatives emphasized the need to get the word out so park visitors and locals attempting to pass through Zion National Park wouldn't be met with surprise over the changes.

Officially announced in May 2024, the park plans to reroute vehicles that exceed 11 feet, 4 inches tall; 7 feet, 10 inches wide; 35 feet, 9 inches long; or those that exceed 50,000 pounds to routes other than the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway. Vehicles that exceed these specifications will need to use existing alternate routes surrounding the park.

Slated to begin by mid-2026, restricting access to oversized vehicles is meant to increase safety on the roadway by reducing potential collisions, decreasing overweight loads across bridges not built to handle the extra weight and reducing lane crossings due to long vehicles negotiating turns.
