SALT LAKE CITY — The second man suspected of being involved in the shooting of a 55-year-old woman in a Glendale neighborhood has been arrested.
Sam Keith Maez-Ripley was booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on Friday on one count of aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury, being in unlawful possession of a dangerous weapon as a restricted person, and 14 counts of felony discharge of a firearm resulting in serious bodily injury.
About 10:45 p.m. on Aug. 10, police responded to reports of a shooting at a home near Concord Street and California Avenue. When officers arrived they learned that two people had approached a home in the Glendale neighborhood and began shooting, with at least one of the rounds striking a woman inside the home.
The 55-year-old woman was taken to a local hospital with "serious but not life-threatening" injuries, according to Salt Lake police. She had been shot in the arm, police said.
On Aug. 12, Apisai Matelau, 19, turned himself in to police and was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of aggravated assault resulting in serious injury. Matelau told police that he had agreed to "commit a robbery for disposable THC cartridges," according to a police booking affidavit. Matelau added that he did not know what residence they were going to and did not know that the intent of the other suspect was to shoot into the residence, police said.
Video surveillance from a doorbell camera where the shooting occurred showed two men walking along the back side of the residence with one holding a firearm. Police later identified Maez-Ripley as the one "walking past a camera with a handgun in his hand." Shortly after walking past, "gunshots can be heard on the video," according to a police booking affidavit.
Police later obtained call records for a cellphone belonging to Maez-Ripley and his girlfriend which "put the device in direct proximity of the scene of the shooting at the time that it occurred," stated the affidavit.
Maez-Ripley was on felony probation for robbery at the time making him a restricted person in possession of a firearm, police said. Maez-Ripley is "believed to have fled after the shooting" but was later arrested at his residence, according to the affidavit.
