Measure, measure and measure

An article about furniture that fits your home must mention the importance of measuring. So, this tip is a freebie. Any time you're looking to purchase new furniture or appliances make sure you measure, measure, and (just for good measure) measure again.

Nothing is more frustrating than assembling a piece of furniture or having it delivered and going to slide it into place... only to find it doesn't fit.

The best advice is to take a measuring tape everywhere.

Measure the room, measure your current furniture, measure the entryway and doorways — then write it all down. Make sure to note the width, length, height, and depth dimensions. It will seem like a lot, but each aspect will affect the look, feel, and feng shui of the room.

Think about your routine

Walk through your house and think about your average day-to-day.

Ask yourself these questions:

Which rooms in your house are you drawn to?

Why do you spend more time in these rooms?

What could be added to make the rooms better for you?

Then consider the rooms you aren't going into.

Why are you avoiding them?

What could be done to make you spend more time in those rooms?

Keep your answers in mind or write them down before your next shopping trip.

Perhaps you're an avid runner but you don't have a good spot to sit down and put on your shoes. That can easily be remedied by adding a bench at the end of your bed or an accent chair near the front door.

Or perhaps you find that you're constantly picking up shoes, backpacks, and coats by the front door — because that's where your kids drop everything as soon as they come home — consider adding a hall tree for extra storage.
