HERRIMAN — The Bear River girls lacrosse team doesn't lose often — just once in the last three years, in fact — and won't have to learn how to do so any time soon.
Head coach Jeremy Webb led his team to its 36th consecutive victory and third straight 4A state championship in a 12-9 win over Payson Thursday at Zions Bank Stadium.
"This was our goal coming in," Webb said. "I knew we had the team. The thing is, we knew it wouldn't be come down to one or two of our girls, even though we've got some really good girls. We knew coming into the season it would take a team effort."
The Bears bounced back from a quick 3-1 deficit to Payson in the first quarter to rattle off a 7-2 run and lead 8-5 at halftime. Payson came back to tie the Bears' second-half output 4-4, but the damage had already been done. The Bears dominated with size and speed en route to cementing their dynasty in Utah lacrosse.
"It's honestly just so surreal and I'm just grateful for all the people that have helped us get here," junior Shelby Wilkinson said. "This has been a community effort with our coaches and the fans supporting us and our teammates and I'm just really grateful for the community and the team that we have."
Wilkinson added that the biggest contributor to the team's success on the field has been the ability to "work hard together while having fun."
