HERRIMAN — Champions were born Thursday at Zions Banks Stadium with the first state title in program history for the Fremont girls lacrosse team.
The Silverwolves — described by head coach Seth Jones as "12 wolves, one pack" — broke off a 9-0 run starting in the first quarter and held off a late surge by Mountain Ridge for an 11-10 win in the 6A title game.
The Sentinels were playing in their third straight state final after winning it all in 2022, but the "Wolfpack" from Plain City treated them like any other opponent.
"They played like a pack today," Jones said. "When they play together — no heroes — everybody steps up and gets the job done."
The two teams — who both won their semifinals by just 1 point — traded goals early until junior Azlyn Williams finished off an early hat trick to give Fremont a 4-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.
"It feels amazing," Williams said of her hat trick and the win. "Every single time that the ball was in the goal I got so excited that it was just another point for us and that we were one point closer to winning."
The Silverwolves stayed aggressive to take a 10-3 lead at halftime before the Sentinels put together a 7-0 run of their own to bring them within one, 11-10, with 19 seconds left in the game.
Fremont got the necessary defensive stop in the final seconds to win their second-straight one-score game and take home the first-place trophy.
"It means everything," Jones said. "It means that teams like Fremont, that are out there, that don't have clubs feeding them ... get to be a state champion. It just speaks to (the players') hard work and dedication. They can come in as freshmen and sophomores and they can beat a team like this."
The final girls state final is the 4A title game between Bear River and Payson at 4 p.m. MDT at Zions Bank Stadium.
