THE DOG HOUSE — Cautious online shoppers have long been wary of so-called porch pirates, who take advantage of the holiday shipping boom to swipe the latest gaming console or wireless earbuds from the front porches of consumers.
Shoppers now have yet another thing to worry about, after a canine was spotted absconding with a recently delivered package a few days before Christmas last year.
Doorbell footage shows the pup happily eyeing the package after it was thrown onto the porch, then waiting patiently to make sure the coast was clear before snatching the goods and making a quick getaway.
The resident said they were "mad, at first" because the package contained gifts for their daughter and granddaughter, but the gifts were later recovered from the dog's owner in good condition.
"I have to laugh when I watch the video cause that smart dog looks around to make sure no one is looking and waits till the Amazon driver leaves before coming and grabbing the package," the resident said. "The little thief knew what he was doing. Looks like he was an expert!"
Expert or not, it's the first documented instance of porch piracy by this particular furry friend, and sources say the puppy patrol has decided to "throw a bone" to the perpetrator and let him off with just a warning.
"It appears to simply be a case of an overexcited canine who couldn't wait for Christmas Day — or it's possible the package was shipped in a truck also carrying ground beef," one source from the canine anti-piracy prosecutor's office said. "Either way, we don't believe there was any ill intent and we've decided not to do anything that might risk its status as a 'good boy.'"
