For many years Utah has been one of the country's fastest-growing states, and it's easy to see why. The high quality of life and red-hot economy beckon to those looking to relocate and encourage those born and raised here to remain.
One of the reasons Utah is so successful, especially economically, is the well-educated and highly skilled workforce. For more than 75 years, Salt Lake Community College has helped build the state's economy by making higher education affordable to all.
Many of the 190 programs offered at the college are critically important for maintaining Utah's economic strength. SLCC is one of Utah's top providers of workforce development and applied technology programs as well as one of the largest suppliers of transfer students to the state's four-year universities.
SLCC offers something for nearly everyone. Students who pursue workforce training can quickly find meaningful work in high-demand industries, while those working toward associate degrees can easily transfer credits and continue their schooling or land high-paying jobs immediately upon graduation from SLCC.
Classroom time combined with hands-on learning
One way SLCC supports Utah is by providing all students, both degree-seeking and those pursuing short-term training, opportunities to put their classroom learning into action. In partnership with Utah's key industries and businesses, SLCC offers students hands-on learning through state-of-the-art lab spaces that emulate the environments students will encounter in their future careers.
One such space is SLCC's International Aerospace/Aviation Education Center in Salt Lake City. During their time in SLCC's two-year Aerospace/Aviation Technology-Aviation Maintenance program, students are perfecting their craft, including learning the ins and outs of complex aircraft systems by working on the lab's five airplanes.
"I knew I wanted a school where I could put my learning into practice," SLCC aviation student Aja Seims says. "In the lab, you can really see how a concept is connected and how it works." Upon graduating from the program, SLCC's aviation students can immediately move into jobs that pay up to $120,000 per year.

A tradition of providing quality education at an affordable cost
SLCC believes college should be available to anyone who wishes to pursue it and offers some of the lowest tuition and fees among Utah's higher education institutions. In fact, students working toward a bachelor's degree can save nearly $10,000 by spending their first two years at SLCC. The certificate programs are also affordably priced and highly valued by many of Utah's top employers.
SLCC also has a financial aid office with dedicated staff that stands ready to help students take advantage of available assistance. Many students are eligible for grants and SLCC's Promise program, which covers the cost of tuition when federal aid falls short. The college also offers hundreds of private scholarships for nearly every kind of student and in nearly every type of program.
Technical education and short-term training
SLCC is home to Salt Lake Technical College, which offers state-of-the-art instruction in manufacturing, healthcare, construction, computer networking, business, truck driving, culinary arts and more. Salt Lake Tech programs feature weekly enrollment and flexible scheduling, and most cost only $90 per credit hour.
Upon completion of training, many Salt Lake Tech students find they have their pick of high-paying jobs, and they can quickly begin building a bright future for themselves and their families. Also, these jobs are in industries that are critically important to Utah's economy, so Salt Lake Tech graduates are benefitting all Utahns by helping grow the state's top employers and burgeoning small- and medium-sized businesses.
