SALT LAKE CITY — BYU's Lauren Gustin may lead the NCAA in rebounds per game at 14.6, but No. 12 Utah was able to contain her presence on the court to 13 rebounds — just below her average.
Since winning the Pac-12 championship last season, Utah has been able to put up big numbers, especially at the 3-point line. The Utes seemed to put up a 3-pointer almost every time they had the ball to help take an early lead and to carry the Utes throughout the game.
Utah shot 50% from 3-point range, making 17 across the roster for an 87-68 win over the Cougars.
Gustin has been a strong and reliable player for BYU over the past few years, and being on top is not an unfamiliar feeling for her after leading the NCAA last season with 16.7 rebounds per game.
"Lauren Gustin is tough," Utah head coach Lynne Roberts said. "She just has it figured out; she's really effective."
The Utes presented a challenge for Gustin in rebounds as they rank No. 14 in rebounds per game as a team. That may explain why Gustin's opportunities to excel in that area were limited.
"We contained her, but I don't think you can ever stop her," Roberts said.
Just last week, BYU had high hopes for a successful season with a 6-0 record. Now, after being handed back-to-back losses, the Cougars have to be ready for their next game against their more further north in-state rivals Utah State on Tuesday, Dec. 5 at the Marriot Center.
