Testosterone is a hormone in every person's body that is critical for function and wellbeing. Even though women also need testosterone, it's vital to men's health.

According to Harvard Health, testosterone is "essential to the development of male growth and masculine characteristics." In fact, testosterone is the hormone that plays a starring role in puberty, sex drive, bone strength, muscle growth, and energy and mood.

When men hit about 30 to 40 years old, testosterone tends to fade, the National Library of Medicine says. Here are five warning signs you might have low testosterone and what you can do about it.

1. Low sex drive

One of the biggest indicators of possible low testosterone is a significant decrease in libido, according to the Urology Care Foundation. Any drastic decline in sex drive is a cause for concern, so if your body isn't responding to things that would normally be sexually stimulating, it may be worth talking to your doctor. These conversations are especially essential if you're experiencing erectile dysfunction, as low testosterone is a major contributing factor.

2. Hair loss

Among its many other jobs, testosterone is one of the hormones responsible for hair growth. The Cleveland Clinic says loss of hair could be an indication of low testosterone levels. If you find yourself wondering why your armpits are a little smoother, it could be time to get a simple blood test to see if your testosterone is low.

3. Increased body fat

Men with low testosterone often have an excess of body fat, even if they are eating well and exercising regularly. According to Healthline.com, "Testosterone plays a role in fat metabolism, helping men to burn fat more efficiently. Dropping levels of testosterone can cause an increase in body fat." Low testosterone can even cause a condition called gynecomastia, which is an increase in male breast tissue.

4. Decrease in muscle strength and mass

According to a study published in Therapeutics and Clinical Risk Management, testosterone is known to aid in bone density and muscle mass. You may not necessarily experience a decrease in strength, but lower testosterone can result in less muscle mass.

5. Difficulty with concentration and memory

Many men with low testosterone have trouble concentrating and poor memory. A 2019 review of studies published in the National Library of Medicine suggested that there may be a link between testosterone replacement therapy and improved memory in older men.

Treatment for low testosterone

You can receive treatment for low testosterone and other hormone therapies at Trilogy Medical Center. Lauren Muir, their nurse practitioner, specializes in hormone replacement therapy. She can help you feel like yourself again.

Treatment includes injections of bio-identical hormones to replenish those low levels. In fact, Trilogy uses hormones from natural sources such as soy, yams, and cactus. Muir says the hormones begin to integrate seamlessly into the bloodstream, where they are utilized by the body to maintain balance.

While it's common for people to accept unbalanced hormones as a normal part of life, it doesn't have to be. You can get back to feeling like your optimal self again with the right — and personalized — treatment.
