SALT LAKE CITY — There are only two programs in the country with two wins against Power Five opponents through Week 2: Colorado and Utah.
Utah needed a come-from-behind effort on the road Saturday to overtake future conference opponent Baylor, but without its starting quarterback and tight end (as well as a handful of other players on the two-deep roster) the Utes have everything still on the table as it nears conference play.
While the on-field product hasn't been perfect, Utah has done what its needed to, and that's to start the season unblemished. For that effort, Utah maintained its spot in the national rankings.
The Utes stayed at No. 12 in both the Associated Press Top 25 and Coaches Poll rankings after Week 2 action.
But the story of the weekend was the Pac-12, which went 18-0 to start the season before Arizona become the first team to lose a game from the conference. Even then, the Wildcats forced overtime against Mississippi State after throwing four interceptions in the game.
The early-season success from the Pac-12 has landed the conference eight teams ranked this week, which is makes the Pac-12 the second conference all-time to have that many teams ranked in a single week, joining the SEC.
USC jumped up one spot to No. 5 after its dominant start to the season, including a 49-point first-half effort against Stanford. The Trojans are followed by No. 8 Washington, No. 13 Oregon, No. 16 Oregon State, No. 18 Colorado, No. 23 Washington State and No. 24 UCLA. That's two-thirds of the conference ranked in its last season as it is currently constructed.
For its last season, the Pac-12 is making up for lost time.
Georgia remains the top-ranked team in the country with 55 first-place votes, though its slowly losing ground in the votes to the teams around it. Following the Bulldogs is No. 2 Michigan (2 first-place votes), No. 3 Florida State (3), No. 4 Texas (2) and then No. 5 USC.
The Longhorns gained the most ground this week, jumping up seven spots, after its primetime win over Alabama. The Crimson Tide dropped seven spots to No. 10.
