NEW YORK CITY — The Met Gala and its signature flamboyant outfits stunned and surprised viewers on Monday just as it does every year.
I don't know about you, but I am always shocked by the outrageousness that ends up being strutted down the red carpet.
I always realize — while watching the most extravagant, gaudy outfits get shown off at this ostentatious event — I actually have no clue who most of the celebrities are.
However, I do know who Jared Leto is, and when a 6-foot-tall white furry cat walked into the gala, I definitely was not expecting it to be him.
In this video you can see Cat Leto baffling the singer Lizzo, striking poses to the paparazzi and later, holding the massive cat head while showing off his couture outfit with a flowing black cape that was hiding underneath the fur.
The theme of this year's gala was "in honor of Karl" to celebrate the Costume Institute's new exhibition, "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty." Lagerfeld was a German fashion designer who worked for prominent fashion houses such as Balmain, Chloé, Fendi and Chanel, Vogue explains. He died in 2019.
Leto's cat costume paid homage to Lagerfeld's Birman cat named Choupette.
Leto is set to star as Lagerfeld in an upcoming biopic he is producing on the fashion designer's 50-year career.
Interestingly enough, Leto was not the only feline look Monday night that paid tribute to Choupette.
Rapper Doja Cat shined in a bejeweled cat gown, cat ears, cat claw-inspired nails and a prosthetic kitty nose. Lil Nas X glittered in silver body paint, pearls and whiskers and reportedly only responded to reporters with "meow." Other guests referenced Choupette through cat purses, and even a blue cape the color of the cat's eyes.
Choupette, who has her own Instagram account, said in a post, she was invited to walk the red carpet at the Met Gala but decided to "stay peacefully & cozy at home."
Oh, to be the spoiled cat of a very successful, late fashion designer. Seems like a nice gig.
