GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany — Olympic skiing gold medalist Rosi Mittermaier has died at the age of 72. She won downhill and slalom gold at the 1976 Winter Olympics and narrowly missed a sweep of all three women's Alpine skiing events at the Games. German news agency dpa cites a statement from Mittermaier's family that she died peacefully on Wednesday "following a serious illness." Mittermaier's wins brought what was then West Germany its only gold medals of the 1976 Olympics. She missed out by .12 seconds to Canada's Kathy Kreiner in the giant slalom and took silver.
