CENTERVILLE — A 16-year-old is in critical condition with "very significant" injuries after being hit by a car while walking to school on Wednesday, police said.

The girl was walking east across Main Street at 2025 North in Centerville when the collision occurred at 11:28 a.m., according to police. The girl was in a marked school crossing near Reading Elementary School — the school zone wasn't active at the time — when she was struck by a Toyota Highlander traveling south.

Centerville Police Chief Paul Childs said the girl was thrown and landed 50 to 60 feet from where she was hit. He said she had "very significant" injuries — including to her head, face and torso — and was taken by ambulance to the hospital.

The driver of the Highlander, an 82-year-old woman, was cooperative with police and stayed at the scene.

Childs said the collision occurred in a 40 mph zone, and said the area is not a "crash-prone" location, with light traffic at that time of day. He said there was a light drizzle, but urged drivers to be aware of their surroundings.

At the time of the collision, the girl was on her way to high school in Farmington, police said.

The road was closed in both directions for around an hour, Childs said, but is now open. Investigators said they were speaking to several witnesses.
