Sep. 20--Snubbed by Broward County venues, "Bodies ... The Exhibition" has found a home in South Florida, at The Shops at Sunset Place in South Miami.
The show, which displays 20 whole human cadavers and 260 internal organs and specimens, will open Friday and run through March 25.
"Bodies" recently closed in Tampa at the Museum of Science & Industry, with more than 600,000 visitors attending the show. It will open at Sunset Place at the former Virgin Megastore, a record retail outlet encompassing 33,000 square feet.
In July, the Fort Lauderdale City Commission barred "Bodies" from opening at War Memorial Auditorium. Mayor Jim Naugle, among others, questioned the origins of the show's contents. The commission also stated scheduling conflicts as another reason for the ban. Hosting the show would have cut 27 events scheduled for the auditorium.
Shortly afterward, the Museum of Discovery and Science vetoed "Bodies" as well.
While the corpses for the show appeared to be legally secured from the Chinese government, museum President Kim Cavendish cited "ethical concerns" and the absence of donor documentation as problems that led to the blocking of the exhibit.
