THE COUNTRY — We've all seen the videos of people helping stray animals — from stopping traffic to spending months trying to gain an animal's trust.
Rescue circumstances can be dangerous because of the frightened animals themselves or because of the nature of the rescue. Plenty of videos show people stopping freeway traffic, making human chains to access a struggling animal in a deep canal, and jumping into raging waters to save an animal in need.
For Robert Brantly, there was no danger in sight when he stopped to pick up a tiny kitten from the side of a country road. The "danger" came only a few moments later.
"Passed a baby kitten I knew wouldn't make it through the night," Brantly states on an Instagram post, "and the wife has been wanting a cat for the farm; figured I'd stop and rescue the thing," were his famous last words.

When he picks up the very teeny, screaming kitten, Brantly sees one tiny head, then two then three then four, popup out of the grass at the side of the road. And he is quickly ambushed by an army of kittens.
Brantly ends up rescuing 13 kittens total — 13 kittens when he thought he was getting one.
Depending on your point of view, you could see this as a "no good deed goes unpunished" scenario. And when he tried to get all the kittens into his car, Brantly was probably leaning in that direction. Instead, he has taken being a cat rescuer in stride. In subsequent videos, it's clear that neither he nor his family are cat people, but with the generosity of internet commenters, he dove in first and is learning very quickly, and happily, to be a cat person.
This rescue journey is still unfolding, including trying to bathe the kittens, which you can follow on Instagram.
