SPRINGVILLE — A man died after he was hit by a train Tuesday on Evergreen Drive near Springville, the Utah County Sheriff's Office confirmed.

According to Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon, the flashing lights and crossing arms were down signaling the train was approaching the intersection. Cannon said witnesses in vehicles stopped on both sides of the tracks reported the man crossing the tracks from the east side to the west in what appeared to be an attempt to beat the train.

The man was struck by the train and died, said Cannon. The train took a while to stop after the collision due to its length and weight, he said.

"It looks like it's just an unfortunate accident," said Cannon. "Maybe a misjudgment and a poor decision by this gentleman."

Cannon said that the sheriff's office is currently investigating the scene.

The man was identified as Colin Robson Younkin, 38, of Springville.
